Before You Call â Locked Out Guide
Being locked out is stressful. That stress is exactly what rogue locksmiths exploit. Take a breath. Check these options first. A rushed call to the first Google result could cost you hundreds of pounds.

Time to find an MLA locksmith
Is there another way in?
Back door. Side gate. Window you left ajar. Garage. Conservatory. Check every possible entry point before calling anyone. A locksmith is the last resort â not the first.
Does anyone else have a key?
Family member. Friend. Neighbour. Landlord. Managing agent. Even a taxi to collect a spare key costs less than a rogue locksmith callout.
Are you renting?
Your landlord or letting agent may have a legal obligation to assist. Call them first â particularly out of hours when a rogue operator is most likely to be the top Google result.
Is it late at night? Consider a hotel.
A budget hotel room costs ÂŖ50 to ÂŖ80. A midnight rogue locksmith callout can cost ÂŖ300 to ÂŖ800. Book a room. Charge your phone. Find a genuine MLA locksmith in the morning. Remove the panic â remove the vulnerability.
Do not just Google it
The top Google results for "locksmith near me" are frequently not genuine local businesses. They are fake listings using virtual phone numbers and fabricated reviews. Search the MLA finder instead.
Use the MLA finder
Go to locksmiths.co.uk/find-a-locksmith on your phone. Enter your postcode. Call an MLA member directly. Every MLA locksmith has been vetted, inspected, and DBS checked.
Check the bad actors database
Search the number or company name at locksmithscams.co.uk/bad-actors before calling. Takes 30 seconds.
Ask these three questions before agreeing to anything. The answers tell you immediately whether you are talking to a genuine locksmith or a fake call centre.
"What company name will appear on my invoice?"
Same name as the listing â genuine. Different name or hesitation â fake call centre. End the call.
"Can you give me a firm total price before you arrive?"
Realistic range â genuine. "From ÂŖ49" or "depends on the job" â bait price tactic. End the call.
"Will you try non-destructive entry before drilling?"
Yes always â genuine. Vague or no â end the call.
